What is the standard dishwasher size?

Most US kitchens are built with a dishwasher opening about 24 inches wide, 34 inches high and 24 inches deep. That is a cabinet convention, not a manufacturer requirement. Across our 51 manufacturer-documented records, the minimum opening height runs from 32 1/8 to 34 1/2 in, the minimum width of 24-inch models from 23 5/8 to 24 in, and the minimum depth from 21 7/8 to 24 in. Check the exact model's opening, not the label.

Is a 24-inch dishwasher actually 24 inches wide?

Not exactly. "24-inch" is a category. The bodies of our 37 24-inch-category records measure 23 1/2 to 23 15/16 in wide, and their documented minimum opening width runs from 23 5/8 to 24 in. Measure the cabinet opening, not the old machine.

How tall is a dishwasher opening?

Full-height built-in models in our records need a minimum opening height of 32 1/8 to 34 1/2 in; 5 of them need more than a standard 34 inches. Where a maximum height is documented, it runs from 33 1/2 to 36 1/2 in. The Fisher & Paykel DD24SAX9N single-drawer record needs 16 1/4 in, a different installation. How deep should a dishwasher opening be?

Documented minimum opening depths run from 21 7/8 to 24 in; 28 records need the full 24 inches. Door clearance, countertop overhang and the water and power connections behind the machine still need checking against the exact installation guide.

What size opening does an 18-inch dishwasher need?

Our 14 18-inch-category records publish a minimum opening width of 17.7 to 18 in, with bodies 17 1/2 to 18 in wide. An 18-inch machine in a 24-inch opening is a cabinet conversion, not a direct replacement.

Are a dishwasher’s dimensions the same as the opening it needs?
